Rangos Histology Core

Overview of Equipment and Services

The Rangos Histology Core provides high quality, individualized histological services to support investigators in the Rangos Research Center, as well as researchers across the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC, and other academic institutions in the Pittsburgh region. The Core is equipped with a full suite of histology instrumentation, including a Tissue Tek VIP tissue processor and a TEC embedding station, a Leica RM2235 microtome and CM 1850UV cryostat for paraffin and frozen sectioning for FFPE and OCT blocks, respectively, and a Leica Aperio CS2 slide scanner for high resolution digital imaging at 20x and 40x magnification. The Histology Core offers a range of staining services such as H&E and special staining (e.g. Masson's Trichrome, PAS, Picrosirius Red, Alizarin Red). Users can download the Leica ImageSchopex64 for Windows 10 or higher at this link to view Slide Scanner images (.svs files) provided by the core.

8:00 am – 4:00 pm

  • External labs without full access into to the Rangos building can submit samples at the main entrance of Rangos (near the Ronald McDonald house entrance) in the large blue/gray cabinet just inside the automatic doors - please email pitthistologycore@pitt.edu notifying samples are dropped off
  • Frozen samples are not accepted after 2:00p on Fridays due to weekend closure
