ALERT

Upcoming Training Opportunities:

Do you need help finding specialized equipment or expert services for your research? Whether you are new to the Pitt research community or a regular shared facility user, join one of our upcoming webinars to learn more about the resources available across campus. These sessions will offer an overview of resources available, how to access equipment and services, iLab training, and an opportunity to ask questions.

Join one of the following two webinars:

No prior registration is required and anyone is welcome to join.

In addition, save the date for an in-person Shared Facility Showcase on the afternoon of Monday, October 19, 2026. More information about this event and how to register will be shared soon.

X-Ray Diffraction Facility

Overview of Equipment and Services

The X-Ray Diffraction Facility located in the Chemistry Instrumentation Center on the 4th floor of the Chevron Science Center uses X-ray Diffraction methods to determine the three-dimensional structures of both small-molecules and proteins. The Facility is equipped with two single-crystal X-Ray diffractometers. The Bruker Venture Duo X-ray Diffractometer has two X-ray tubes, with both Molybdenum and Copper ImuS micro-focus X-ray sources which can be selected based on sample characteristics. Our second X-ray Diffractometer is a Bruker Prospector Ultra with a Copper ImuS micro-focus source. Both X-ray instruments allow data to be collected at nitrogen-cooled temperatures as low as 100K. Over 2500 new structures of organic, organometallic and inorganic compounds have been determined in our facility.

The X-Ray Diffraction Facility accepts submitted samples and will also train local users who wish to collect their own X-ray data.  Most of our work involves samples from the University of Pittsburgh Departments of Chemistry, Pharmacy, and Material Science, but we are also engaged in in several outside collaborations involving researchers from other Colleges and Universities.
