ALERT

Upcoming Training Opportunities:

Do you need help finding specialized equipment or expert services for your research? Whether you are new to the Pitt research community or a regular shared facility user, join one of our upcoming webinars to learn more about the resources available across campus. These sessions will offer an overview of resources available, how to access equipment and services, iLab training, and an opportunity to ask questions.

Join one of the following two webinars:

No prior registration is required and anyone is welcome to join.

In addition, save the date for an in-person Shared Facility Showcase on the afternoon of Monday, October 19, 2026. More information about this event and how to register will be shared soon.

Mass Spectrometry Lab

Overview of Equipment and Services

The mass spectrometry (MS) facility operates three high-resolution instruments: the Orbitrap Exploris (OE-240, Thermo, 2022), Q-Exactive (Thermo, 2013), and MALDI TOF-TOF (Bruker, 2016). Additionally, two low-resolution instruments are available: the LCMS2020 (Shimadzu, 2010) and GCMS2010S (Shimadzu, 2013). The OE-240 is primarily utilized for the analysis of digested and intact proteins using Nano and electrospray ionization (ESI) sources. The Q-Exactive employs soft ionization techniques, including ESI and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), and is routinely used for accurate mass analysis of compounds within the m/z 100–3000 Da range. This instrument provides elemental analysis with a mass accuracy within 5ppm due to its high resolution. Open-access instruments, such as the MALDI, LCMS2020, and GCMS2010S, are always available to department users who have received prior training from facility personnel. The facility offers high- and low-resolution MS data for organic, bio-organic, intact protein, digested peptide, and oligomer analyses using ESI, MALDI, APCI, and electron ionization (EI) techniques.
