Research Histology - Pitt Biospecimen Core

Overview of Equipment and Services

Research Histology (RH) is a division of the Pitt Biospecimen Core that provides comprehensive histology, imaging, and image analysis services for human and non-human fixed or frozen specimens. Services include routine and specialized tissue processing, and embedding, sectioning, and staining of FFPE and frozen tissue samples. The core can provide routine H&E staining, histochemical staining, immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining, and various microtomy sectioning (including scroll or thick sections). Specialty services include multiplex IHC (up to three antibodies per slide), evaluation and titration of novel antibodies, TUNEL assays, tissue microarray construction (0.6, 1.0, and 2.0 mm core sizes) designed to investigator specifications, organoid and ALI (air liquid interface) processing, and technical handling of very small or delicate samples. Imaging and analysis services are also available at 20x and 40x magnifications with z-stack (multiple plane) capability. RH prioritizes customer service and offers customizable histology services to meet project needs. Sample drop-off is available at Scaife Hall, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and UPMC Shadyside.
